To apply to Spelman College, prospective students must submit a completed application either online or via mail to the Office of Admissions. Aside from the contact, background, family, education, work experience and academic interest information, a complete application includes a 500- to 1,000-word essay, two letters of recommendation, official high school transcripts in a sealed envelope sent from the high school, forwarded SAT or ACT scores and a nonrefundable application fee. Applications must be complete on the following dates: November 1 for early decision, November 15 for early action, February 1 for fall regular decision, April 1 for fall transfer students and November 1st for both spring regular decision and spring transfer students. Early decision requires a commitment from the prospective student to attend if accepted. Early Action does not bind the prospective student to attend.

Spelman requires no minimum high school GPA. Nor is there a required minimum score for the SAT or ACT. Admission to Spelman is competitive, however. As of 2009, Spelman admitted only 39 percent of those who applied. Those admitted had an average 3.61 high school GPA, an average combined SAT score of 1,078 and an average ACT score of 23.
Prospective students who are Georgia residents with a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher can apply for a HOPE scholarship, which renews each year.
International prospective students need to submit a certificate of their secondary education graduation. If English was not the language of instruction at that school, international prospective students must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and officially submit their scores. International prospective students must also demonstrate their ability to pay for all costs associated with a Spelman education. Spelman offers financial assistance to international applicants, but it is limited.
Home-schooled applicants must take the SAT II subject tests as well as the SAT I or ACT II test. If the home-schooled prospective student spent any time at all in high school or at another college, they must submit official transcripts for that time.
Students at Spelman must maintain a 2.0 GPA to remain in good standing with the college. Students who do not will be dismissed.
The Office of Disability Studies has a full array of services to help students achieve academically including interpreter, reader and note taker services. Students can also consult the Counseling Center, the Freshman Success Program and the Comprehensive Writing Center for assistance.
Dismissed students can apply for readmission after at least two consecutive semesters after they have been dismissed if they have completed with a grade of "C" or better in at least four liberal arts courses at another accredited institution. If Spelman dismisses a student twice, that student cannot apply for readmission.
