Requirements for Spelman College

Located just west of downtown Atlanta, Spelman College is a historically black liberal arts college for women. Founded in 1881, Spelman College offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees to over 2,100 students. The student-faculty ratio is 12-to-1, and 87 percent of Spelman students receive some sort of financial aid in the form of grants, loans or work-study assistance.

  1. Application

    • Spelman College offers three application options. Prospective students may apply online via the admissions website, online using the CommonApp or by mail using Spelman's paper application.

    Standardized Test Scores

    • Applicants must submit records of standardized testing. Spelman College accepts both the ACT and SAT I.

      The average applicant ACT score in 2009 was 23, while the average SAT score was 1,078.

    High School Transcript

    • Prospective students are required to submit their official high school transcripts in sealed envelopes, sent directly from their high schools.

      The average applicant GPA in 2009 was 3.9.

    Recommendation

    • Spelman College requires two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher and another from a high school counselor. Recommendation forms can be found on the Spelman College admissions website.

    Personal Essay

    • Spelman College asks applicants to submit a personal essay of 500 to 1,000 words. The essay prompt changes each year and is available on the admissions website.

    Application Fee

    • In 2010, Spelman College charged a non-refundable $35 paper application fee or a $25 online application fee.
