Emory University Undergraduate Admission Requirements

Emory University is a private institution in Atlanta, Georgia, that offers four-year degree and graduate degree programs. Founded in 1836, the university is affiliated with the Methodist church and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Students who want to attend Emory University can choose to study fields such as accounting, business law, art history, engineering and even film studies. Other potential majors include German studies, journalism, linguistics, music, real estate and nursing, but aspiring undergraduate students first must fulfill several admission requirements.
  1. High School Diploma/Test Scores

    • Students who are interested in enrolling at Emory University must have their high school diploma. A GED is not accepted at the university. They must submit their scores from standardized tests such as those of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB/SAT) or the American College Testing Program (ACT). Home-schooled students also should submit results from three SAT II exams: one in mathematics and the other two in subjects of the student's choosing.

    Transcripts

    • To get into Emory University, high-school transcripts must show that a potential student has completed a general college-preparatory program that features four years of English and three or four years of mathematics, which must include at least two algebra courses and one geometry course. Students who wish to concentrate on a science or math-related major also must have taken an additional year of math as well as three or four years of lab science rather than the minimum two years of science. In addition, students must have completed at least two years of history and at least two years of a foreign language. Also, potential Emory University students must have received an introduction to music and art. If a student has completed any college-level coursework, he additionally must submit transcripts of all colleges attended.

Emory University looks to see if potential students took the most rigorous courses available at their schools and had a B+ or A- average or better. Also, home-schooled students must submit a comprehensive yet concise explanation of their curriculum.

    Recommendations

    • Aspiring Emory University students must submit a recommendation form from a guidance counselor. In addition, the school requires students to gather recommendations from up to two teachers, advisers, employers, religious leaders or coaches in the form of a letter or evaluation form. For students who are home-schooled, at least one recommendation must come from an individual other than a family member.

    Application/Essay

    • Students who want to attend Emory University must write an essay regarding why the university is particularly a good match for them. They also must submit short-answer responses about what they enjoy, what makes them curious and what interests them. In addition, they should list their commitment in extracurricular activities and emphasize their leadership positions. A paid fee must accompany the application, which students should submit by the school's established deadlines.
