How to Apply to a Canadian University

Choosing your university and program of study is one of the most important decisions in your life, but applying and waiting for a response can be one of the most stressful periods in your life. Keep in mind that you can apply to as many Canadian universities as you like. In fact, it is a good idea to apply to more than one school, so that if you are denied admission to your first choice, you still have options.

Instructions

  1. Universities in Ontario

    • 1

Get log-in information from your school. If you are about to graduate from secondary school and are applying to an Ontario university, you will need your school number, student ID number and a personal identification number to apply. You can get these from your guidance counselor.

    • 2

Go to the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) website. The OUAC accepts applications for all universities in Ontario.

    • 3

Choose your application. Choose application 101 if you are a graduating secondary school student or application 105 if you have been out of secondary school, are an international student or are transferring from another institution.

    • 4

Complete the application. For those using application 101, your secondary school will automatically forward your academic information, so you just need to answer a few questions regarding personal information and fill in the names of the universities to which you want to apply. For those using application 105, you need to answer more questions about where and when you have studied in addition to making your university choices.

    • 5

Pay your fees. With application 101, you can include up to three universities on your application for a fee of $115. If you wish to include more than three, you must pay an extra fee of $38 for each extra university. For application 105, the base fee is $120, with an extra charge of $38 for each extra university. You can pay by major credit card or through Internet banking.

    Universities Outside of Ontario

Go to the website of the university to which you want to apply.

    • 7

Go to the admissions section. You can find information about how to get an application, what requirements you need to meet to apply and any application deadlines.

    • 8

Fill out and submit the application. Although the applications will differ from institution to institution, all will require that you include some academic information. In most cases, you only need to include the name and address of your secondary school(s) for the university to access your academic records.
