Visit the websites of California state universities such as California State University and the University of California (see Resources) and read about each of the universities. Visit the California Colleges website (see Resources) for a list of the state's universities and colleges.
Research several universities. Consider their location, application fees, essay requirements, tuition costs and majors. Review the admission requirements for each university. Most universities require that you submit an essay along with your application, and many charge an application fee.
Decide on the universities to which you would like to apply. It may be in your best interest to apply to more than one.
Write an essay to submit with your applications. Most universities will ask that the essay discuss your accomplishments, you interest in the particular university and your motivation to earn a degree from that school.
Visit the universities' websites and print out a copy of the application, or, if it's offered, submit one online. If you are mailing your application, include your essay, letters of recommendation and a copy of your official transcript. If you are submitting online, attach your essay and letters of recommendation in electronic form.
Fill out the application and submit it. Submit payment if you are required to pay an application fee.
