How to Apply to Universities in Ontario

The province of Ontario utilizes a centralized process for university applications. Prospective undergraduate, professional and some graduate students apply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) which maintains a website specific to this purpose. The OUAC also maintains statistics on program applications and provides an anonymous browsing feature for applicants curious to review information about various undergraduate programs before completing an official application. Students can also use the site to track their applications until the applications are sent to the respective universities, after which applicants must contact the schools directly for updates.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the OUAC home page and review the application options. As of January 2011, the OUAC portal is the starting point for all undergraduate applications undertaken in Ontario, as well as professional programs in Law, Medicine, Rehabilitation Sciences and Education. If you wish to apply for a program other than those listed on the OUAC home page, contact the admissions department of the institution you are interested in and request application instructions.

Choose the application link appropriate to your program and situation. Undergraduate applicants will complete one application if they are still in high school; those with a high school diploma will complete another. Click on the application link and review the application information to make sure you have chosen the right one.

    • 3

Click on the "Online Application" link below the application information.

    • 4

Create an account by clicking on the "Create Account" link on the bottom right hand side of the application page. If you are a high school student, you will not have the option to create an account. Simply log in using the information provided to you by your school.

    • 5

Complete the online application and pay the applicable fee. The OUAC charges a basic fee for the first three applications and an additional per-school fee after that. Additional fees are also incurred if you are applying from an address outside of Canada or if you are applying to a school that charges a supplemental document evaluation fee.
