Instructions

    • 1

Review admissions requirements for each school offering a degree in education. See Resources for a list of links to schools. Note the application deadlines. Online applications are available through TEAS in September and the applications are due in early December. They are processed in April for enrollment in the upcoming academic year.

    • 2

Collect a list of volunteer work and teaching or related experience you may have in working with the age group you wish to teach. Many schools ask for experience, which can include working as a teaching aide, girl/boy scout guide, tutor, coach, camp counselor, teaching assistant at a university or volunteer work with special needs groups. If you are in college, approach the school administrators for volunteer opportunities. Positions at schools or camps require a criminal background check.

    • 3

Write an essay about your desire to become a teacher. Attend a personal statement workshop if you need help with writing an essay.

    • 4

Go to the UOAC website for online applications. Click on the link for TEAS Instruction Booklet, and read the document and click on the TEAS Online Application for the next academic year. Create an account and fill out the application.

    • 5

Fill out the supplementary application by providing any information the application requires. Document courses taken and hours of experience. This one-year program confers an Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification. Study the requirements for the certificate. If you intend to teach grades 4-12, you need a teachable subject and appropriate prerequisites.

    • 6

Log on to your TEAS account to check statuses and reply to responses you will receive from schools after April.

    • 7

Approach your targeted universities individually to apply for a graduate degree program in education. To apply for a graduate teaching degree you must have the Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification.
