One of the United States' oldest and most prestigious universities, Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, boasts excellent resources and many illustrious alumni (including several presidents). Like many schools, Yale does not have a required Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) range; however, the average student admitted in 2008, scored between 700 and 800 on the SAT Critical Reading, between 700 and 780 on the SAT Math and between 700 and 790 on the SAT Writing. Yale requires non-native speakers of English to score at least 100 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test or 600 on the paper-based Test.

Like Yale, New York University (NYU) does not have a required SAT score; however, most admitted students score between 620 and 720 on the SAT Critical Reading and Writing sections and between 630 and 720 on the Math. Similarly, they suggest that applicants score over 100 on the TOEFL internet-based test (IBT).

One of the most prestigious schools in the renowned University of California system, the University of California-Los Angeles, known as UCLA, gives students the chance to pursue their studies while surrounded by the many resources of one of America's largest cities. For the SAT, the average UCLA student in 2008 received between 560 and 680 on the Critical Reading section, between 590 and 720 on the Math section and between 580 and 700 on the Writing. For the TOEFL, UCLA requires a minimum of 83 on the IBT or 550 on the paper-based test (PBT).
