Which US Universities Accept a 500 on the TOEFL?

Thousands of universities all over the world rely on TOEFL, or or Test Of English as a Foreign Language, scores to help make student admission decisions. The test is essential in proving that a prospective student has the English skills they will be expected to use in an academic classroom. The accepted minimum score on the TOEFL differs by university, and depends on what type of test was taken: paper-based, Internet-based or computer-based, as the metrics of evaluation for the tests differ.

  1. The University of Utah

    • The University of Utah requires international applicants graduating from high school in the United States to meet the same requirements as domestic applicants, including a minimum TOEFL score of 500 on the paper-based test.

    Alabama State University

    • A minimum score of 500 on the paper-based TOEFL exam is accepted at Alabama State. The requirement for the computer-based exam is 173.

    Stanford University

    • The minimum TOEFL score to be admitted to Stanford University is 250 for the computer-based test, 100 for the Internet-based test, or a minimum 600 for the paper-based test.

    University of Boston

    • The University of Boston requires a minimum score of 215 on the computer-based TOEFL exam. The minimum requirement for the paper-based test is a 550, while the Internet-based test minimum is 84.

    Eastern Michigan University

    • Eastern Michigan University accepts a minimum TOEFL score of 173 on the computer-based test, 500 on the paper-based test, and 61 or higher on the Internet-based test.
