List of Georgia's 4-Year Public Colleges and Their Requirements

All public Georgia four-year colleges require that students graduate from high school with four qualifying units each in math and English, three each in science and social science and two in foreign languages. In addition, each institution sets minimum SAT and/or ACT score for admission. While the public universities do not publish a minimum required high school grade point average (GPA), they do publish the average high school GPAs for incoming freshman. These numbers are another good indicator of the standards of each university. Students attending Georgia public universities must also provide proof of state-required immunizations.
  1. Research Universities

    • The University System of Georgia contains three universities designated as research universities. These research universities typically have significantly higher admissions standards than other colleges. Georgia State requires an SAT math score of 400 and an English score of 430, or an ACT score of 17. The average freshman has a 3.31 high school GPA. University of Georgia requires a combined SAT score of 1150 or an overall ACT score of at least 24. The average freshman has a 3.65 high school GPA. Georgia Tech has the highest test score requirements: a minimum SAT score of 590 in English and 650 in math or a 25 on the ACT. The average freshman has a 3.72 high school GPA.

    Mid-point Schools

    • A handful of Georgia's public universities require admissions scores that are higher than the state four-year minimum of 400 for SAT Math and 430 for SAT English or 16 for ACT. These schools often attract candidates that could qualify for a research university but prefer a smaller college. These colleges set the bar for SAT English at 460, 490, 500 or higher and the bar for SAT math at 430, 460 or more. They do not accept ACT scores below 19 and some require at least a 20 or 21. Georgia College and State University, the state's only public four-year liberal arts college, requires a combined SAT of at least 1050 or an ACT of at least 23. These more demanding schools accept freshman with an average high school GPA of 3.15 to 3.20.
