One of New Jersey's state universities, Rutgers was founded in 1766. The university has three campuses in Newark, New Brunswick, and Camden. Several buildings were originally built during the colonial period but have subsequently been remodeled by later architects and styles. Composed in Latin, the university's motto means "Sun of righteousness, shine upon the West also." Rutgers' enrollment is just under 53,000 undergraduates and graduate students. With a high endowment and an accomplished student body, Rutgers is routinely ranked in the top twenty universities in the country.

Founded in 1908, Montclair State University enrolls more than 18,000 graduate and undergraduates. With campuses that cover almost 480 total acres, the school boasts over 250 minors and majors for its students. To this date, it is the only school to offer a Ph.D. in pedagogy. Famous graduates of Montclair State include legendary baseball catcher Yogi Berra, the actor Jason Biggs, and the poet Allen Ginsberg.

Founded in 1855, Kean University is a public liberal arts school, located on 150 acres. The university's motto, translated from Latin, means "Always Learning." The school's education and physical education departments are very well-respected. The undergraduate enrollment tops 11,000, and the graduate enrollment is over 2,000. The school has announced plans, in 2007, to open an extension in China's Zhejiang Province. Notable alumni include the painter Carmen Cicero, the comedian Chris Johnston, and the actress Marisa Petroro.
