Syracuse University (SU) has a large, sprawling campus and a similarly large number of courses of study in journalism and broadcasting. SU has bachelor's degrees in broadcast, newspaper and magazine journalism, as well as one in radio, television and film. The university offers master's degrees in arts and broadcast journalism, documentary film, media studies and communications management. SU also has Ph.D. programs in media studies and mass communications.
In addition, Syracuse is home to the Newhouse School, which has two programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense dedicated to teaching broadcast journalism and photojournalism to students who are active-duty military personnel.

The College of Media at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has bachelor's degree programs in news-editorial journalism, media and cinema studies and broadcast journalism. The college also has master's degrees in journalism and a Ph.D. in communications.
The College of Media gives career assistance to its students and has a high number of successful graduates who have worked at magazines such as "Time," "Rolling Stone," "Popular Mechanics" and "Entertainment Weekly," and newspapers including the "Chicago Sun-Times," the "St. Louis Dispatch" and the "Chicago Tribune." The university has online chat sessions regularly and special prospective student sessions every week.

Columbia University has a graduate-level journalism school dedicated to nothing but training students to become professional journalists. The Journalism School at Columbia was begun by a grant from Joseph Pulitzer, who saw journalism as a public service. It administers the duPont-Columbia Awards as well as the Pulitzer Prizes, and the faculty includes reporters, editors, filmmakers, columnists and specialists in digital media. The school has Master of Science and Master of Arts programs, and a Ph.D. in communications.
