The Indiana University of Pennsylvania journalism department prepares students for a wide variety of journalism-related careers in print, magazine, online, marketing, and public relations industries. Students have the flexibility to tailor their course work to their particular area of interest. The program provides internships for real-world experience that supplements course work. Students in the department publish Taste of Class, an online food magazine, and The HawkEye, an online newspaper devoted to investigative reporting.

According to the college's website, the Penn State College of Communications is the nation's largest accredited communications program. Students in the journalism program study for careers with newspapers, magazines, radio, and online outlets. Students choose a study track that focuses on print journalism, broadcast journalism, or visual communication. Tracks may be combined with faculty approval. In addition, the college offers a program through the Center for Sports Journalism for students who wish to focus their studies on sports reporting and writing.

Located in downtown Pittsburgh, the Point Park University journalism and mass communication program emphasizes hands-on learning from professors with real-life experience. Students can choose a concentration in journalism or mass communication.
Thanks to the urban setting, internships are available at a variety of local media organizations, such as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Students can publish their work via the Point Park New Service, a collaboration with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review newspaper or hone their investigative reporting skill with the Innocence Institute, a campus organization devoted to investigating wrongful legal convictions.

Located in the Cumberland Valley, about 40 miles from Harrisburg, Shippensburg University has 6,600 students. The communication/journalism department at Shippensburg University is a member of the Association of Schools in Journalism and Mass Communication (ASJMC). The program stresses critical and creative thinking within the journalism field. Courses cover print, radio, and photo journalism as well as public relations writing. Internships are a required part of the program.

Located in the heart of Philadelphia, Temple University offers the opportunity to study multimedia journalism in an urban setting. The department of journalism offers programs in broadcast, print, photo, and magazine journalism. Temple students also can further their studies through one of a dozen international programs.
Since Philadelphia is the nation's fourth-largest media market, internship opportunities abound. Temple also has several on-campus media outlets and five student journalism organizations. Temple's program is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
