Pennsylvania State Colleges

Established in 1983, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, or PASSHE, is composed of 14 universities across Pennsylvania. These universities offer four-year baccalaureate degree programs and combined are the largest provider of college education in the state. They are the only universities in Pennsylvania that are publicly owned and funded, offering students the lowest cost in college education. Each university is named after the town where it is located.
  1. Bloomsburg University and California University

    • Bloomsburg University, established in 1839, is located along the banks of the Susquehanna River in Columbia County. Ranked as one of the top schools in the northeast, it has earned a strong reputation for its computer forensics program. The university offers 56 undergraduate programs and 20 graduate programs to more than 10,000 students. The most popular programs include education, business, nursing, speech pathology, criminal justice, medical imaging, biology, mass communication and computer forensics.

      California University, founded in 1852, lies along the Monongahela River, 35 miles south of Pittsburgh. More than 7,400 undergraduates and nearly 2,000 graduate students are enrolled at the university, where they can choose from 150 undergraduate majors/concentrations and 50 graduate programs. The most popular programs include education, business, athletic training, psychology, applied engineering and technology, criminal justice, sport management and general studies.

    Cheyney University and Clarion University

    • Cheyney University is a liberal arts, co-ed university located on 275 acres in southeast Pennsylvania. Founded in 1837, Cheyney University is America’s oldest historically black institution of higher education. The five residence halls at Cheyney University accommodate more than 1,200 students. The most popular programs include education, business, hotel, restaurant and tourism management, criminal justice and biology.

      Clarion University, founded in 1867, is located near the Cook Forest State Park. According to its website, it has 27 nationally accredited programs, with a 19-to-1 student faculty ratio. With a little more than 7,300 students, Clarion offers excellent academic challenges and the kind of support and personal attention that allows students to thrive. The most popular programs include biology, business, communications, teacher education and nursing.

    East Stroudsburg University and Edinboro University

    • East Stroudsburg University is located in the heart of the Pocono Region and provides its students with access to the Delaware River. Founded in 1893, the university has a total enrollment of 7,576 students, with 6,372 undergraduates and 1,015 graduate students. The most popular programs include education, nursing, speech pathology, media communications and technology, computer security, athletic training, business and hotel management and restaurant and tourism management.

      Edinboro University is located 15 miles south of the city of Erie. According to its website, Edinboro has more than 100 academic majors, with a field of study for every student interest. The most popular programs include accounting, art, business, communications, computer science, criminal justice, elementary education, secondary education, financial services, management information systems, special education, engineering, environmental science, marketing, nursing, pre-professional studies, psychology, political science, social work and speech and hearing disorders.

    Indiana University and Kutztown University

    • Indiana University rests in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, 55 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The university was founded in 1875. It has 12,827 undergraduate and 2,299 graduate students enrolled from 72 countries around the world. The most popular programs include criminology, education, business, psychology and communications media. Indiana University offers programs at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral level in the Department of Nursing and Allied Health.

      Kutztown University is located just north of the borough of Kutztown in eastern Burks County. Since 1866, the university has grown from one building for training future teachers into a 330-acre campus with 10,700 students. Kutztown University offers bachelor's and master's degrees. The most popular programs include elementary and secondary education, art education, business, communication design, speech communication, English, professional writing, criminal justice, electronic media, psychology, special education and leisure and sport study.

    Lock Haven University and Mansfield University

    • Lock Haven University, founded in 1870, has an undergraduate enrollment of 4,642 on the main campus. According to its website, the university is known for its beautiful scenery and vast outdoor opportunities. Lock Haven provides the perfect atmosphere for learning both in and out of the classroom. Residents enjoy hiking on local trails, tubing, boating and swimming in the west branch of the Susquehanna River. The university offers 49 majors and certificate programs with 41 minors. The most popular programs include education, health science, criminal justice, psychology, business and communication media.

      Mansfield University is a small, rural, public liberal arts institution offering more than 70 undergraduate and graduate programs. Of the approximately 3,400 students, 38 percent are men and 62 percent are women. The most popular programs include biology, business, education, communications, criminal justice, health sciences and music. Located in north central Pennsylvania just below the New York State border, Mansfield University was founded in 1857.

    Millersville University and Shippensburg University

    • Millersville University offers a picturesque 250-acre campus located in beautiful Lancaster County. Founded in 1855, Millersville University enrolls 8,729 students, including 7,604 undergraduates. The most popular programs include biology, business, communication and theater, early childhood education, English, history, earth science, meteorology and psychology. Their nationally recognized meteorology program provides students the opportunity to learn in state-of-the-art facilities.

      Shippensburg University, established in 1871, has 8,326 students, of which 7,143 are undergraduates and 1,183 are graduate students. While more than 90 percent of students are from Pennsylvania, the university has attracted students from 15 nations and 20 states. The most popular programs include communication journalism, teacher education, business, health sciences, engineering, criminal justice, applied physics, graphic art, computer science and psychology. The university’s John L. Grove College of Business is ranked as one of the best business programs in the United States by "U.S. News & World Report" in its “Best Colleges” 2011 ratings.

    Slippery Rock University and West Chester University

    • Slippery Rock University is located in the rolling hills of western Pennsylvania and is the westernmost institution of the 14-campus Pennsylvania state system of higher education. The university offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate programs, including a doctorate in physical therapy. Founded in 1889, the university enrolls more than 8,800 students. The most popular programs include allied health bachelor’s programs as a gateway to a doctorate of physical therapy, athletic training, business, communication, early childhood education, exercise science, parks and recreation, sport management and dance.

      West Chester University is located 25 miles west of Philadelphia. The university enrolls 12,234 undergraduates and 2,258 graduate students. With roots dating back to 1812, West Chester is ranked by "Kiplinger" as among the 100 best values in public colleges for its academic quality and affordability. The most popular programs include elementary education, psychology, management, communication studies, music, criminal justice, accounting, health and physical education, early childhood education, biology, nursing, special education, history and marketing.
