State-Sponsored Colleges in Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, you will find 130 colleges and universities as well as 323 private technical training institutes as of 2011. A fair number of these schools are sponsored by the state. State schools will have lower tuitions for Pennsylvania residents, making the financial burden of education lighter. In Pennsylvania, a state rich in history and culture, many schools are located in big cities like Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, yet others take advantage of Pennsylvania's smaller towns.
  1. Lincoln Technical Institute

    • Lincoln Technical Institute has campuses in northeast Philadelphia, Center City Philadelphia and Allentown. Lincoln Technical Institutes offer Associate of Specialized Technology Degrees and diplomas in medical assisting, medical administration, networking, PC systems and support, pharmacy technician, nursing and electronic engineering. These degrees start students on a path to medical and technical careers.

    Bloomsburg University

    • Of Pennsylvania's 14 public universities, Bloomsburg University in Columbia County is one of Pennsylvania's major state-sponsored colleges. Offering 56 undergraduate degree programs, 44 undergraduate minors, seven career concentrations and 19 graduate degree programs, Bloomsburg University has many choices for students to tailor their education. These programs of study include sciences, education, arts and humanities, health care and business. The schools offers on-campus housing, student services, a library and athletic facilities.

    Kutztown University

    • Kutztown University, located in the Pennsylvania Dutch countryside in southeastern Pennsylvania's Berks County, has approximately 10,700 full-time and part-time students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels as of 2011. The university offers an Honors Program, student exchange programs, seminars, independent study and internships. Kutztown offers academic degree programs in many departments including anthropology, biology, business administration, computer sciences, criminal justice, education, history, mathematics, music, political science, psychology, social work and theatre. In addition to these majors, the university also offers more than 35 undergraduate minors. On-campus housing is available, and the school offers other amenities to students such as an art gallery, a planetarium, a radio station, more than 50 computer labs and a cartography lab.

    Shippensburg University

    • Founded in 1871, Shippensburg is one of Pennsylvania's oldest state-sponsored universities. The campus is located in Cumberland Valley, just outside Harrisburg. Serving approximately 8,300 students in graduate and undergraduate programs, Shippensburg also employs 324 full-time faculty. Shippensburg offers 75 undergraduate programs in the schools of arts and sciences; education and human services and business. Pre-professional programs that are offered include pre-vet and pre-med. In addition, Shippensburg offers 17 graduate degree programs. Student life offerings include nine residence halls, more than 200 student clubs and organizations, sports teams, choirs, bands, student government and a child care center.
