The SAT Requirements for Kean University

Kean University in Union, N.J., founded in 1855, is located on a 180-acre campus 30 minutes from New York City and one hour from Philadelphia. Students can choose from among 48 undergraduate majors and 35 graduate programs, making it the third largest public institution in the state. If you're interested in attending Kean University, you must meet qualifications that include the submission of standardized test scores.
  1. Undergraduate Admisisons

    • To apply to Kean's undergraduate programs, you must submit your application no later than May 31 for fall admission of the same year and Dec. 1 for admission in the spring of the following year. The full application includes a standard university application, available online or in paper form, high school transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a personal essay and an application fee. Kean also requires you to send your official SAT I results, and while there is no minimum score threshold for admission, the average SAT score for students applying to Kean University is 1,020, taken from the critical-reading and math sections only.

    International Students

    • If you're an international student, you can apply to Kean University by mail or online. You will also need to provide your academic record and immigration documents to the Office of the Undergraduate Admission. Your application packet should include a notarized affidavit of support verifying your or a sponsor's ability to pay the full cost of tuition and room and board, an original sponsor's bank statement in U.S. dollars and a copy of your passport. SAT I scores are only required for foreign students who attended high school in the United States, otherwise school transcripts, two letters of recommendation and a personal essay will form the basis for an admission decision.

The NJ Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics

    • The NJ Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics (NJCSTM), allows you to undertake an intensive math and science study program, which confers a five-year combined bachelor's and master's degree in science and technology, or a four-year bachelor's degree in science and technology. To apply, submit a completed application for this specific program, an official copy of your high school transcript, a letter of reference from a math or science teacher and a resume. Separately, you must also submit an undergraduate application, which carries the SAT I requirement. Though there are no minimum scores for the NJCSTM program, high math and science scores are advantageous.

    Admission

    • Though Kean University offers rolling admissions, the optimal time to apply is from mid-November to mid-January, but you should make note of specific deadlines for different programs. Your personal essay should express your educational and career objectives and give insight into who you are beyond being just a student. Admissions are based on the totality of your application package, including how your grades improved during your last two years in high school, your extracurricular activities, your SAT score and what unique facet you'll bring to the campus. For the 2009 to 2010 academic year, 62 percent of students who applied were accepted into the university, according to "U.S. News and World Report."
