Harvard University Requirements for Undergrads

Founded in 1636, Harvard is America's oldest college and enjoys a reputation for attracting the country's brightest and most accomplished students. Its admissions process involves more than test scores and grade point averages, highlighting the individual student's talents and achievements.
  1. Application

    • Harvard University accepts either the Common Application or Universal College Application for prospective undergrad freshmen. The application is also available online at harvard.edu.

    College Admission Tests

    • Harvard University accepts the ACT and SAT (with three SAT subject tests) for admission consideration. However, the school does not publish a score threshold, as admissions test scores are often not the determining factors in an applicant's admission or denial. Scores should, though, be submitted to the admissions office before the November test date of the applicant's senior year.

    Other Criteria

    • Harvard encourages applicants to submit supporting materials, such as CDs of vocal performances, DVDs of theatrical or musical performances, portfolios of fine arts and/or writing samples. The university will consider as part of the application anything that helps demonstrate a student's achievements inside and outside the classroom.

    Interviews

    • Harvard does not require personal interviews for admission, but they are common. Interviews are held on campus, and representatives often visit an applicant's state or hometown.

    Application Fee

    • As of 2009, the application fee is $75, but the university has the discretion to waive the fee in financial hardship cases.
