The Required SAT's for Colleges in Theatre

Students who want to study theater at an American university have many options to choose from: a liberal arts college, where they can pursue coursework in many subjects; a state university, with a large and vibrant student body; or a specialized school for the arts. However, prospective theater students still have to pass many of the same hurdles as the average college applicant, including the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Here are some of the average SAT scores and requirements for schools with strong theater programs.
  1. Yale University

    • As a member of the Ivy League, Yale University is recognized not only for its prestigious programs and excellent theater program but also for its competitive admissions. Like most US colleges, Yale has no required score for the SAT; however, the majority of successful applicants in 2008 scored between 700 and 790 on the writing section, between 700 and 780 on the math section, and between 700 and 800 on the critical reading section.

    The Julliard School

    • One of the most renowned schools for the arts, Julliard offers a prestigious theater program, with many illustrious alumni. Unlike liberal arts schools or traditional universities, Julliard does not require SAT scores for admission. However, international students can bypass the TOEFL requirements by scoring above 550 on either the critical reading or writing sections of the test. American applicants may make their applications even stronger by scoring well on the SAT, though the audition remains the most important factor for admission.
