Colleges for the Performing Arts in Georgia

Pursuing a career in the performing arts requires training and commitment. Finding a good fit for your performing arts education is important -- from the performing opportunities you'll have to the connections you'll make. If you're looking to hone your musical, dramatic or dance skills at the college level, consider some of these programs that Georgia colleges offer.
  1. Brenau University

    • Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia has several performance-related degree options in their College of Fine Arts and Humanities. Their Dance Department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Studies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance, both focused mainly on ballet and modern techniques. Brenau's Theater Department offers a Theater major leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a Theater Arts major leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts. The B.F.A. program also offers a Musical Theater emphasis option. In the Music Department, options include a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance and the more general Bachelor of Arts in Music degree with a major in Music. All of the above degrees require auditions.

    Emory University

    • In Atlanta, Emory University's Department of Theater and Dance offers a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Studies as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Movement Studies. Either major can be declared without an audition. The Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a track option in Performance. Many performance opportunities are available in all three performing areas, including full seasons of student theater, bi-annual student dance concerts and an annual concerto/aria competition.

    Georgia State University

    • This Atlanta-based University offers a Music Performance major in their School of Music within the College of Arts and Sciences. Admission to this major requires an audition. Also in the College of Arts and Sciences is their Theater major leading to a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies which carries an option of a Performance Studies concentration. Performing opportunities include music ensembles and opera workshops as well as Georgia's longest-running student-run theater organization.

    Savannah College of Art and Design

    • Savannah College of Art and Design offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Performing Arts which includes courses in acting, dance, voice, theater history and improvisation. Six productions are mounted on their main stage per year, including musicals and some original works. SCAD has campuses in Savannah and Atlanta, and a successful audition is required prior to declaration of the major.

    University of Georgia

    • The University of Georgia, located in Athens, offers degrees in Theater, Music Performance and Dance. All are housed in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. The Music Performance major is offered by the Department of Music and leads to a Bachelor of Music degree. Large performance ensemble participation is required for degree completion, and entrance to the program is by audition only. The Theater Department offers an A.B. in Theater, which does not require an audition and encompasses the subjects of stage directing, design and writing for theater in addition to acting. The A.B. and B.F.A. degrees in Dance are both offered by the Department of Dance and both require auditions.
