Performing Arts Colleges in California

Future performing arts students who are looking for schools where the curriculum and performance opportunities are top-notch should head for the West Coast. Many California colleges offer dance, music and theater programs that are enhanced by the proximity to Hollywood and the possibilities of professional mentoring that it affords.
  1. University of San Francisco

    • The Department of Performing Arts at the University of San Francisco strives to teach students to use their art to make the world a better place. Students can choose between a 48-unit major or a 20-unit minor in the performing arts. The main concentrations are in dance, music or theater. Performance opportunities in college productions, concerts and events are open to all university students. Performance students are required to take the core courses, including math and sciences, foundations of communication and humanities.

    University of California-San Diego

    • The University of California in San Diego offers major and minor degrees in both dance and theater. Throughout the school term, students are given opportunities to display their talents in three school productions. Weekend cabaret spots are available for students to showcase their own work. Students are provided with a free ticket to all the productions. Acting classes, including movement, theater design classes, including costume design, and dance classes, including choreography, are offered. A graduate degree is also available in theater.

    San Jose State University

    • The Department of Television, Radio, Film, Theatre, Animation and Illustration at San Jose State University offers a Bachelor's of Arts in Theater Arts, Radio, TV and Film and a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in Art. The school also offers a master's degree in theater. The school offers two theaters for students to showcase their work. Besides acting and directing courses, students are given an opportunity to produce films in local settings. They are also given mentoring opportunities from industry professionals as well as faculty and staff.

    California State University-Northridge

    • The Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication at California State University-Northridge is located in Los Angeles. The school offers a bachelor's and a master's degree in theater as well as a minor. Students participate in up to seven productions in the three theaters every semester. The program is a combination of required classes, such as Movement for Theater Performance or World Theater and Drama I and II, and sections where students can choose classes to fit their own program such as Improvisational Comedy or Touring Theater.
