Try to write in English as much as you can every day. Write down things to do for the day, notes to yourself and emails. Your writing must be simple and clear. Since you will not be able to use spell check or grammar check, do not use words or punctuation you are not sure about. Use familiar words and write in smaller sentences instead. Think about the test essay before writing it. Once you have finished, read it over and check for mistakes.
Practice listening to English by watching the news or movies, listening to CDs or radio. Train your hearing to pick up the key information without going back and listening to it again. Listen to the words, learn the vocabulary, expression and structure of the English language. When you are taking the TOEFL test, listen for the main ideas and try to remember the details.
Practice your reading skills by reading books, magazines and newspapers without using the dictionary. You will not be able to use your dictionary on the test. You may not understand every single word in the passage, but you should be able to understand what it is about. You can read it only once, so pay attention. The questions will be in the same order as the information in the passage. Skim the passage to find the correct information to answer each question. There will be questions about the details, the main idea of the passage and vocabulary questions pertaining to the terms or the words used in the passage.
Speaking clearly is important. Do not use words if you cannot pronounce them. Do not use big words. Use simple, clear language to explain your thoughts. Using proper grammar is also important. Pay attention to your expression and intonation. You will lose marks if you use incorrect vocabulary or idioms. Practice with your English-speaking friends whenever you get a chance.
