Junior College Requirements

Junior colleges can be a good choice for students who don't want to pursue a four-year college education. Also known as community or technical colleges, these schools offer associate's degrees and certificate programs that can prepare students for careers in specific fields. Those who decide to pursue a bachelor's degree can transfer to a four-year school before or after completing their junior college classes. Students typically must complete a few steps for admission to a junior college. Since each college sets its own requirements, be sure to check with the schools you apply to for their specific criteria.
  1. Completion of High School

    • Community colleges typically require students to have a high school diploma, to have passed the General Education Development test or to have completed a home school program. High school graduates must submit official transcripts to the community college as part of the application process. Applicants with GEDs must submit official copies of their GED scores. Home school graduates may need to submit a signed affidavit verifying completion of their home education program.

    Testing

    • Junior college applicants may need to take the ACT or SAT and submit their scores to their college of choice. Schools may require a minimum score for admission. In addition, some junior colleges administer their own placement tests to determine which classes students are ready to take.

    Applications

    • Potential students must submit an application to the junior college they wish to attend. Most colleges offer online applications linked from the admissions section of their website. You may be required to pay a fee when you submit your application.

    Orientation

    • Some schools require first-time students to attend an orientation. Students may sign up for their first set of classes as part of orientation activities.

    Other documents

    • Students may be required to submit proof of immunizations to the junior college. Students hoping to transfer from another school will be asked to submit transcripts from the college they attended previously.
