Lehman College Admission Requirements

Lehman College is a liberal arts school that is a part of the City University of New York System. The 37-acre campus welcomed just over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students in the fall 2010. Students hoping to gain admission to Lehman College and begin their liberal arts studies have to meet a number of requirements. Take time to build your admissions package before you submit it.
  1. Freshman Admissions

    • Students interested in enrolling in Lehman College directly out of high school must meet the school's freshman admission requirements. Students must complete a well-rounded high school curriculum that includes four years of English and social studies, three years of math, two years of a foreign language and lab science, and one year of fine arts. Note that these are minimums, so students who exceed these requirements will boost their chances of admission. In addition to transcripts, applicants must submit SAT or ACT scores, though there are no minimum score requirements.

    Transfer Admissions

    • Students who have earned college credit at another school and now want to attend Lehman College apply as transfer students. Students with 12 college credits or fewer must meet the freshman admission standards. Students with 12 to 24 college credits must meet freshman admissions criteria or have a 2.75 college GPA. Students with 24 or more credits must have a 2.3 college GPA. If students have an associate's degree and are applying for a bachelor's degree program, they should have a 2.0 cumulative GPA if they studied in the City University of New York or State University of New York system or a 2.3 GPA if they studied outside of the system.

    Graduate Admissions

    • Graduate admissions depend on the program to which students are applying. However, no matter the program, students should expect to submit their complete college transcripts, which should indicate the receipt of a bachelor's degree. Most programs also require students to submit GRE scores. Graduate programs, such as the master's degree in speech-language pathology, require an interview with the department. Some programs call for students from certain undergraduate fields; for example, applicants to the graduate biology program must have a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, physics or a related field.

    Honors Program

    • Lehman College has an honors program, which welcomes students who have excelled academically in high school. The admissions committee looks at the student's transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, and letters of recommendation. Applicants to the honors program also have to write an essay and, in some instances, participate in an on-campus interview. Specific academic requirements vary depending on the strength of the applicant pool.
