Hunter College Admission Requirements

Hunter College is a member of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Located in the heart of Manhattan, Hunter College is the largest college in the CUNY system. Hunter College accepts undergraduate, transfer and graduate applications, with varying admissions requirements for each group.
  1. Undergraduate Applications

    • Hunter College considers an applicant a "freshman" applicant if they have not previously attended a college or university since graduating from high school. To be considered for admission, freshmen applicants must fill out a CUNY application, which may be completed online. Students must submit transcripts from all high schools or secondary schools attended, or a photocopy of their General Educational Development diploma.

Hunter College also requires freshmen applicants to submit their SAT or ACT test scores and pay an application fee. The average high school GPA for matriculated freshmen in 2009 was an 88 (on CUNY's 100-point scale), and the average SAT score was 1173 (math and critical reading only).

    Transfer Admissions

    • Hunter College also accepts applications from students who are already enrolled at a postsecondary educational institution. Hunter accepts an average of 2,800 transfer students per year, according to the college's website. Transfer applicants, like freshmen applicants, must submit their application through the CUNY system; applicants are required to submit official transcripts from all high schools they have attended (or proof of a GED) with proof of graduation indicated, as well as official transcripts from all postsecondary schools. In Fall 2009, the average GPA for an accepted transfer student was 3.07.

    Graduate Admissions

    • Hunter College also accepts applications for graduate programs. Requirements vary from program to program, but all applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from at least a regionally accredited U.S. institution, "comparable in standard and content to a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College," according to the graduate admissions web site. Applicants must also have at least a "B" average for courses in the intended area of graduate study and at least a "B-" overall average. Potential graduate-degree students must complete Hunter's "Application for Graduate Admission," available at the Hunter College web site, and submit all required supporting documents, which vary depending on program.
