Morehouse College Admission Requirements

With approximately 3,800 universities in the nation, the college selection process can be confusing. Decide on factors that are important to you -- for example, do you want to attend a large, urban campus or a small women's college? If you seek a historically black college, your campus choices may be more limited, but your future brighter. In fact, 40% of African-American students who have earned their degree, did so at a historically black university. Atlanta University Center is the largest consortium of African-American colleges in the nation, and includes Morehouse College -- an all-male historically black university. If you decide to apply, familiarize yourself with the admission criteria.
  1. High School Requirements

    • As the admission committee at Morehouse reviews your application, they will look to see that you have satisfied all course requirements. Just because you have graduated from high school or received your GED does not mean that you have completed the courses necessary for college admission. Applicants to the college must have completed four units in English, three units in math, two units in natural sciences, two units in social sciences and two units of the same foreign language. Ask your school counselor for help with selecting college preparation courses.

    Application Pieces

    • Candidates to Morehouse must submit the proper admission credentials. The college accepts both the Common Application and Morehouse application. First-year applicants should submit a $45 fee, SAT or ACT score report, college essay, high school transcript and recommendations. It is also suggested that candidates take the SAT II examinations in English and Mathematics. While not mandatory, students may want to include a student resume indicating all.extracurricular and volunteer experiences. The fall application deadline is February 15; however, all first-time freshmen applying for Early Action must submit an application before November 1.

    Applicant Criteria

    • Morehouse is part of the Atlanta University Center.

      With a 67 acceptance rate, Morehouse is considered moderately competitive.The College Board states that the institution considers the overall academic record first. Of highest importance is the student's earned GPA, followed by standardized test scores. Other important admission factors include class rank, difficulty of the secondary school record, college essay and recommendations. The college, however, may also consider other various factors from alumni relations to talent and ability. The Morehouse website outlines the student profile. "Students who present strong academic records with a B or better average (85 or better on a 100-point scale) and test scores of at least 1500 on the SAT or 22 on the ACT have the best chance for admission to Morehouse," it states.

    Transfer Applicants

    • If you have completed 26 college credits and have earned a 2.5 GPA, you can apply as a transfer student. Transfers must provide official transcripts and catalogs from colleges previously attended and complete a minimum of 60 semester hours at Morehouse College. Students will receive credit if they have earned a "C" or better in a course similar to one offered at Morehouse; a maximum of 60 semester hours are transferable. Candidates for readmission to the college will also be considered.
