Speech pathologists, otherwise known as speech therapists, help people who have problems speaking. Coursework includes classes in physiology, anatomy, diseases and neuroscience. U.S. News has compiled a list of top schools for speech pathology.
  1. University of Iowa

    • The University of Iowa is considered one of the best speech pathology schools in the United States. This public university, in Iowa City, enrolled approximately 30,300 students in 2011. Its department of communication sciences and disorders offers undergraduate and graduate programs in speech pathology, including a bachelor's degree in speech and hearing science, a master's degree in speech-language pathology, and a clinical doctorate in audiology.

    Northwestern University

    • Northwestern University is a private university located in Evanston, Illinois. It enrolled approximately 20,000 students in 2011. The university's school of communication offers a master of arts in speech and language pathology. Coursework includes the development and disorders of swallowing, voice articulation, phonology, fluency, neurological substrates, language and literacy.

    Purdue University- West Lafayette

    • Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana. It enrolled almost 40,000 students in total in 2011. Other campuses of this publicly-sponsored university are located in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Westville, and Hammond. A speech language pathology program is offered by the school's speech, language, and hearing sciences. To be admitted to this program, an applicant must have an undergraduate degree in any major, although a degree in communication disorders is preferred.
