Emerson College Requirements

Boston's Emerson College has more than 3,000 students focused on liberal arts studies with an emphasis on communication. Undergraduate students can study in fields such as communication studies, broadcast journalism and media studies, while graduate students focus on publishing and writing, creative writing and communication management. Applicants to Emerson College must meet a number of requirements, which vary for undergraduate and graduate applicants.
  1. Academic Credentials

    • Both undergraduate and graduate students applying to Emerson College must submit their academic credentials as a part of their application. For undergraduate students, this means submitting their high school transcripts, which should include a Secondary School Report form completed by their school counselor. Graduate students need to submit official transcripts from their undergraduate institution. These transcripts should come directly from the school, not from the applicant.

    Test Scores

    • Emerson applicants can expect to take standardized tests regardless of their program level. Undergraduate students must submit their SAT or ACT scores. The standardized test that graduate students take depends on their program of study. Graduate students applying for programs such as communication disorders, creative writing and journalism take the GRE, while students in communication management, health communication and integrated marketing communication can take the GRE or GMAT. No standardized test score is required for graduate applicants to media art.

    Recommendations

    • Emerson College wants to hear from former teachers and professors of both undergraduate and graduate applicants. Undergraduate applicants submit one teacher evaluation, and the teacher completes the Teacher Evaluation Form (see Resources). Graduate students submit three letters of recommendation from individuals with whom the applicant has an academic or professional relationship, such as former professors or supervisors. These individuals mail a letter vouching for the applicant directly to Emerson College.

    Additional Graduate Requirements

    • Graduate students have to fulfill a number of other requirements as well. They must submit a professional resume that details their academic and professional history. Emerson graduate applicants also have to submit essays; the graduate program determines the essay questions that applicants must answer. Some programs have additional requirements. For example, media art graduate applicants must submit a portfolio, while creative writing applicants must submit a writing sample of 15 pages or fewer.
