Junior College Transfer Requirements

Attending a junior college can be an affordable way to begin your higher education, and it can help you ease into the demands of college life without being overwhelmed by a large university. But those who want a four-year degree will eventually need to transfer to a different school. While requirements for junior college transfers may vary, several requirements are common.
  1. Transcripts

    • Colleges require that students submit transcripts from the junior college they attended, as well as their high school. These transcripts must be sent directly from the schools to the university to which you are applying. The university may also require official copies of your ACT or SAT scores.

    Other Documentation

    • All schools require you to complete a transfer application and submit it, along with the accompanying fee. Some schools also require transfer students to submit a letter of recommendation, a resume and/or original essays.

    Program Requirements

    • Students must meet the requirements for admission into the major or academic degree program they want to pursue at the university. These requirements may be more stringent than the general university standards that apply to students who transfer from other universities.

    Grade Point Average (GPA)

    • Universities often require transferring students to have a minimum GPA. At some schools, this may be as low as 2.0, while others may require a grade point average as high as 3.2 for transfer consideration.

    Foreign Language Background

    • Some schools require that students have a minimum amount of education in a foreign language. This requirement can be fulfilled with classes taken in high school or in junior college.
