How to Calculate My Predicted TER Score

TER (Tertiary Entrance Rank) is a score used by Australian universities for student selection. Universities set minimum TER scores for each course and students who don't record that score can't join the course. In 2010, the name for TER changed to ATAR, Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, but the same principles apply and the acronym TER is still widely used. The use of TER/ATAR allows universities to assess students from different state education systems with the same standard. The South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre calculates the rank of students who finished the South Australian Certificate of Education and Northern Territory Certificate of Education, while Tamania and Western Australia use their own institutions to calculate their students' ranks.

Instructions

    • 1

Download an Excel TER calculator or visit an online TER estimator. All TER calculators work similarly, but the Newman College TEA and TER calculator is a good example.

    • 2

Open the Excel spreadsheet calculator. Choose to disable macros in Excel for added safety.

    • 3

Select your year 12 completion date, i.e., 2010. The Tertiary Institutions Service Center changes the adjustment courses scaling algorithms used to calculate TER/ATAR every year.

    • 4

Introduce the name and results of your four best courses in order, from best to worst. Select a course name by clicking on the arrow on the right corner of the cell. A list of course names will drop. Introduce your course results, or predicted results if you haven't yet taken the exams. Results range from one to 100. The calculator will produce an estimated TER/ATAR score based on your actual or predicted results.

    • 5

Compare your predicted TER/ATAR score with the minimum TER/ATAR score of the university course you hope to join. You can find that information on most university websites.
