How to Calculate an Intercept Course

Linear math has two variables in each equation, x and y. Intercepts are the points where a graph's line passes the x and y axes. Intercepts are the easiest places to graph, so they should be the first things you determine when solving any linear equation.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate your equation, looking for the variables x and y. For this example, the equation will be 2x+5y=10. Notice that the equation contains an x and a y.

    • 2

Set x to zero and solve for y. So for this equation, 2(0)+5y=10. Divide out the 5 and y=2. This is where the line passes through the y axis.

    • 3

Set y to zero and solve for x. For this equation, 2x+5(0)=10. Divide out the 2 and x=5. This is where the line passes through the x axis.

    • 4

Place dots on your intercepts and connect the line.
