How to Calculate a Year's Grade Average

Calculating your grade point average, or GPA, helps you understand whether you are in need of tutoring. Grades can affect your chances of being accepted into your college of choice or receiving a scholarship. You should calculate your GPA each quarter or semester to determine whether your grades are at risk so you can take the necessary steps to improve them.

Instructions

    • 1

      Create a list of each course and each course's final grade.

    • 2

      Attach a value for each letter grade by using the assigned values.

      A+ = 4.0

      A = 4.0

      A- = 3.7

      B+ = 3.3

      B = 3

      B- = 2.7

      C+ = 2.3

      C = 2

      C- =1.7

      D+ = 1.3

      D = 1

      D- = 0.7

      F = 0

    • 3

      Determine the amount of credit hours for each course and write this number next to the grade's value. You can find the course's credit hours from your course schedule, a course catalog or from your school.

    • 4

      Multiply the course credit hours by the grade value for each course. This amount is the quality points for each course. For instance, you received a grade of A in a course with 3 credit hours. The quality points would equal 12, as (4 X 3 = 12).

    • 5

      Add the total number of quality points.

    • 6

      Divide the total quality points by the total credit hours. This amount is your year's GPA.
