How to Calculate GRE Percentile

GRE stands for Graduate Record Examination, which is a test that is taken by many individuals who want to enter business schools or graduate programs. Admissions officers in institutions of higher learning often use a person's GRE score as an indicator of academic aptitude and ability. An applicant's GRE percentile ranking shows how the person scored compared with other individuals who took the test.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain your GRE score. You can do this by phone (888-473-8333) or mail (automatically mailed to you) or by registering online at the Education Testing Service website (see Resources):

    • 2

Compare your verbal reasoning score to the table provided by the Educational Testing Service website (see Resources). You can find your score on the left-hand side of the table and then view the number to the right of that score. That number reflects your percentile, which is the percentage of people who scored lower than you. Therefore, the higher your score, the higher percentile you will be in. Possible scores range from 200 to 800.

    • 3

Compare your quantitative reasoning score with the table provided on the website. The scores share the same range as the verbal reasoning scores, and the percentile is interpreted in the same manner.

    • 4

Compare your analytical writing score with the table provided. The scores here range from zero to 6.0, and the percentile can be interpreted in the same manner as the other sections of the test.
