Colleges in the State of Florida

The state of Florida is home to over 100 colleges and universities, including some of the largest and oldest in the nation. There are a number of nationally recognized programs in both academics and athletics, as well as a number of smaller schools that offer specialized curricula and more intimate learning environments. Florida offers prospective students a diverse range of options for pursuing a college degree.
  1. Florida State University

    • Florida State University is one of the oldest universities in Florida and is designated by the Carnegie Foundation as one of the most distinguished research universities in the nation. There are approximately 40,000 students enrolled at the university, and the school prides itself on the diversity of its student body. The school offers over 275 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional levels, including programs in medicine and law.

    University of Central Florida

    • The University of Central Florida serves approximately 53,000 enrolled students annually and offers over 225 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional levels. Although the university is relatively new compared to some of its older counterparts, it has quickly established itself as a leader in teaching and research in a number of fields including optics, engineering, computer science, business and education.

    University of Florida

    • The University of Florida is the largest and oldest university in the state of Florida and the fourth largest in the nation. Approximately 51,000 students are enrolled annually, and the university offers approximately 300 degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels across 16 schools. The university is renowned for its academic diversity and for its wide range of established programs in international education, research and service.

    Ringling College of Art and Design

    • The Ringling College of Art and Design offers bachelor's degrees in 14 areas of study, including advertising design, computer animation, fine arts, illustration, painting, printmaking and sculpture. With an annual enrollment of approximately 1,200 students, the college operates on a much smaller scale than many other Florida schools. However, it is still considered to be one of the most prestigious art colleges in the U.S.

    New College of Florida

    • New College of Florida is designated by the state legislature as an Honors College for the Liberal Arts. Less than 900 students are enrolled annually and rather than choosing a predetermined degree track, students are responsible for designing an individualized course of study. With a low student-to-faculty ratio, students are able to collaborate directly with faculty members on research efforts and special projects specific to their interests.
