One of the more extensive programs in the field of forensic archaeology can be found in Erie, Pennsylvania, at the Mercyhurst College Applied Forensic Sciences Department. The Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute (MAI) is known for its extensive work in the field of archaeology and forensics. The institute consists of three interrelated departments: Anthropology/Archaeology, Geology and Applied Forensic Sciences. At the master's degree level students can pursue a Master of Science degree in the fields of forensic and biological anthropology, archaeology and geoarchaeology. The forensics program is designed to give students extensive knowledge of the recovery of crime scenes, laboratory skeletal analysis and sophisticated statistical analysis used to analyze data obtained in the field. Because MAI contracts its forensic services out to law enforcement agencies across the country, students have ample opportunities to study real life cases under the direction of prominent faculty members.
