Colleges in Southeast Oklahoma

Although most areas of Southeast Oklahoma are rural, there are many educational opportunities for those wishing to enhance their education or career. There is a good selection of accredited state universities, private colleges and technical schools in southeast Oklahoma. Many of the colleges in southeastern Oklahoma are in small towns but are within at least 30 to 45 minutes from one of the three Interstates in Oklahoma.
  1. Murray State College

    • Murray State College (MSC) is located in the small town of Tishomingo, Oklahoma, which is just east of Interstate 35. MSC is a fully accredited 2-year community college. MSC offers Associate in Arts, Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Science degrees, as well as a couple of career certificate programs. Associate in Arts degree programs are in majors such as art, child development, English, history, and prelaw. Some of the many Associate in Science and Applied Science degree majors include agriculture, business, computer science, nursing, physical education/coaching and a number a premedical-related programs. The only certificate programs MSC offers are in gunsmith technology and secretarial /office administration. MSC also offers on-campus living to students wanting to live near or on campus.

    Southeastern Oklahoma State University

    • Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SE) is a public university located in Durant, Oklahoma, which is just east of Interstate 35. According to the SE website, as of 2010, student enrollment was 4,075 students with 75 percent of classes having fewer than 30 students. SE is a fully accredited school and offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. SE offers many undergraduate degree programs under majors such as art, aviation, communication and theatre, educational instruction and leadership, management and marketing, music, social sciences and many more. Graduate programs that SE offers are in majors such as behavioral studies, business administration, education, science, technology and occupational safety and health. SE has three residential halls for students that want to live on campus.

    Eastern Oklahoma State College

    • Eastern Oklahoma State College (EOSC) is a fully accredited public community college located in Wilburton, Oklahoma, and in McAlester, Oklahoma. The original campus is in Wilburton and is a residential campus that primarily serves traditional students (students seeking a 2-year degree). The McAlester Higher Education Center, located in McAlester, serves both traditional and nontraditional students (students that live in the area seeking a 4-year degree at a junior college) and offers upper-level classes in conjunction with East Central University and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. According to the latest data the school has, total enrollment for both locations was 2,019 students in 2006. EOSC offers Associate in Arts, Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Science degree programs. The degree majors EOSC offers programs under include majors such as agriculture, social science and music, nursing, business, science and math, and language and education. EOSC also has on-campus residential halls for students who wish to live on or near the school.
