    • According to \"U.S. News and World Report,\" Spelman College, in Georgia, is the top-ranked historically black college in the United States. Spelman College is an independent, private women's college specializing in a broad-based liberal arts education. The college enjoys accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Established in 1883, the 39-acre campus is close to downtown Atlanta. Class sizes are kept small, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 12:1. A wide variety of degree programs are offered.

    Howard University

    • \"U.S. News and World Report\" recently ranked Howard University second amongst historically black colleges and universities. Located in Washington, D.C., Howard University offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.     Morehouse College

    • Atlanta's Morehouse College provides a quality education for male students. Morehouse was recently ranked third among historically black colleges and universities by \"U.S. News and World Report,\" and first by \"Black Enterprise\" magazine. The college offers a broad liberal arts education, and holds the distinction of graduating more black men than any other college in the United States. Students at Morehouse (affectionately known as \"The House\") can pursue extracurricular activities such as sports, student government, performing arts and Greek life.

    Fisk University

    • Fisk University was recently ranked fourth among historically black universities by \"U.S. News and World Report.\" Less than six months after the end of the American Civil War, and only two years after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, three men founded Fisk University at a former Union Army barracks. The first classes were held on January 9, 1866. Fisk University excels in the natural sciences, having currently graduated more future African-American doctorate holders in the sciences than any other institution of higher learning in the United States.

    Xavier University of Louisiana

    • Xavier University of Louisiana was recently ranked fifth among historically black colleges and universities by \"U.S. News and World Report.\" In addition to being a historically black university, Xavier is also affiliated with the Catholic Church. The university places an emphasis on a liberal arts education, and requires all students to complete 66 credit hours of general liberal arts classes. Xavier currently has the highest placement rate in the country for African-American students entering medical school.
