The Environmental Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers eight intermediate level and 16 advanced graduate courses including surface hydrology, urban hydrology and hydraulics, hydroclimatology, modeling of groundwater flow and solute transport.
The school boasts an 11,000-square-foot laboratory dedicated to hydraulics research. The department also operates the Chicago Waterways Observatory, providing access to the watershed area between the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.

Civil engineering graduate students at the University of Colorado Denver may specialize in Water Resources Engineering. The program includes hydrologic and hydraulic engineering classes in urban runoff quality and quantity modeling, flood detention and retention design, Western water rights, open channel hydraulics, river morphology and sediment transport.
The university offers most of these courses in the evening, at one-, two- or three-year intervals depending on enrollment. Students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours to fulfill the master's degree program, establishing details with their advisers.

Purdue University's School of Civil Engineering offers an undergraduate program in hydrologic and hydraulic engineering with courses in water resource sustainability, water chemistry and hydrology. The school focuses on research and boasts a 13,000-square-foot hydromechanics laboratory, where students may study recirculation, sediment transport and other water systems. The Burke Undergraduate Laboratory is a smaller hands-on facility that features hydraulic benches, a subsonic wind tunnel and a viscous flow apparatus.
Student organizations include the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute Student Chapter, the Air and Waste Management Association and the Civil Engineering Student Advisory Council.
