Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has several public and private four-year colleges, including three schools ranked among the top 130 national universities by U.S. News & World Report. These universities have long academic traditions that began in the early 20th, 19th and 18th centuries. Each contains multiple constituent colleges and schools and that offer degree programs in a wide variety of fields.
  1. Carnegie Mellon University

    • Andrew Carnegie founded Carnegie Mellon University in 1900. As of 2009, this private university had more than 11,000 students enrolled in its seven academic colleges and schools: the Carnegie Institute of Technology; the Heinz College; the Tepper School of Business; and the colleges of fine arts, humanities and social sciences, science, computer science and business. The university's College of Fine Arts, ranked seventh among fine arts graduate schools by U.S. News & World Report, offers distinguished programs in architecture, art, design, drama and music. Notable Carnegie Mellon alumni include Andy Warhol, Academy Award winner Holly Hunter and Newbery Award-winning children's author Elaine Konigsburg. In 2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked Carnegie Mellon 22nd among national universities.

    University of Pittsburgh

    • The University of Pittsburgh, founded in 1787, had about 34,000 students as of 2009. This public research university, commonly referred to simply as "Pitt," contains 15 colleges and schools: the divisions of arts and sciences, business, dental medicine, education, engineering, general studies, health and rehabilitation sciences, information sciences, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public and international affairs, public health and social work. Notable University of Pittsburgh alumni include Gene Kelly and Michael Chabon. In 2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Pittsburgh 56th among national universities.

    Duquesne University

    • Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit, a private, Catholic University founded in 1878, had about 5,900 students as of 2009. The university contains 10 academic schools: business, education, health sciences, law, leadership and professional advancement, liberal arts, music, natural and environmental sciences, nursing and pharmacy. Together, these schools offer undergraduate degree programs in 100 fields, doctoral degree programs in 22 fields, and other graduate and professional degree programs in 66 fields. In 2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked Duquesne University 128th among national universities.
