Acting Colleges in Kentucky

The movies "Elizabethtown," "Seabiscuit" and "Ghost Busters" all had scenes filmed in Kentucky. Although it doesn't have the film industry of California, Kentucky actors have the benefit of entering a small market and building their names.   1. Transylvania University

    • Transylvania University Division of Fine Arts offers undergraduate majors and minors in drama. The drama department teaches acting, directing, stage management, technical theater and costuming. Students perform in the Lucille C. Little Theatre, Anna Pearce Carrick Theatre and Margaret V. Haggin Auditorium. Previous productions include "A Christmas Carol," "The Crucible," "School House Rock Live: A Transy-on-Broadway Production," "The Tragedy of Macbeth" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Students also can join Night Out at the Theater, a group that attends theater productions in Lexington, Louisville and Cincinnati.

    University of Louisville

    • The University of Louisville Department of Theatre Arts is renowned for its Repertory Company. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Theatre Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts and also has an African-American theater program for students of color and others to learn African-American theater. Students who enroll in the department have gone on to perform on stage, film and television domestically and abroad.

    University of Kentucky Lexington

    • The University of Kentucky Lexington Department of Theatre offers a Bachelor of Arts, a minor and a Master of Arts in Theatre. The program had a 6:1 student-teacher ratio in 2010, which means that students get important time developing relationships with their faculty. They also can help with productions shown for free to more than 500 high school students each year in Fayette County. Students can take part in the James W. Rodgers Playwriting Competition, which is open to anyone under age 30.
