The most flexible college option for military spouses is online coursework. Many online colleges such as Excelsior College, University of Phoenix, Kaplan University and Western Governors' University provide flexible enrollment options and varied degree programs. Benefits include shorter more frequent terms, absence of a commute, and the ability to continue from any location with Internet access. It is the most expensive option, however, and it is important to ensure the accreditation of online schools and the transferability of credits.
Satellite campuses of local colleges and universities are found on most military bases. While these colleges are intended for the further education of soldiers, family members may also enroll in courses. The University of Maryland is just one of the universities available on bases both inside and outside the United States. These campuses provide live classroom instruction and will often accept College Level Examination Program, or CLEP, tests for college credit.
Some military spouses have the opportunity to attend colleges or universities near where they live. This option provides the greatest number of degree programs but the least flexibility in completing them because of frequent relocations. Some spouses will choose to commit to a degree program and stay behind when the military member deploys or has a permanent change of station.
