The first architecture school in the U.S., started in 1871, offers the highest student-to-teacher ratio with 10 students to each teacher. A five-year program in architecture or four-year program in urban-regional studies or the history of architecture is available. The popular Cornell-in-Rome program gives students one semester in Italy to study architecture. Courses include architecture as a cultural system, building technology, structural concepts and site planning among many other areas.

The strength of the five-year program--requiring 156 credits for graduation--lies in its program structure. The first year offers students the basics of design principles. Second-year courses emphasize design theory and processes, while the third year focuses on design principles, technical concepts and applications. By the fourth year, students have the opportunity to study abroad. The fifth year is reserved for independent work and internship.
