Rankings of Architecture Colleges

The quickly changing landscape of life on earth is a challenge the modern world has not seen before. Effects of global warming and population growth demand the best design and environmental solutions from skilled architects. Deciding upon a school of architecture to study at is equally challenging. For more than a decade, the Design Futures Council has offered rankings of the best U.S. architecture schools in its Design Intelligence journal. The criteria used for its survey of university programs is based on analysis and planning, communication, computer application, construction methods and design, research and theory, and sustainable design practices.
  1. Cornell School of Architecture, Art and Planning

    • The first architecture school in the U.S., started in 1871, offers the highest student-to-teacher ratio with 10 students to each teacher. A five-year program in architecture or four-year program in urban-regional studies or the history of architecture is available. The popular Cornell-in-Rome program gives students one semester in Italy to study architecture. Courses include architecture as a cultural system, building technology, structural concepts and site planning among many other areas.

    Syracuse School of Architecture

    • The fourth oldest architecture school, established in 1873, offers an intense five-year program. It requires 162 credits with 120 in architecture, 30 in arts and sciences, and the remaining 12 in electives. The program stresses visual design, architectural history, theory, and structural design applications, in addition to minor course studies in sociology, fine arts and geology. Non-architecture Syracuse students may earn a 21-hour minor in architecture degree.

Virginia Tech School of Architecture and Design

    • The strength of the five-year program--requiring 156 credits for graduation--lies in its program structure. The first year offers students the basics of design principles. Second-year courses emphasize design theory and processes, while the third year focuses on design principles, technical concepts and applications. By the fourth year, students have the opportunity to study abroad. The fifth year is reserved for independent work and internship.
