The University of Maryland University College offers an undergraduate degree program with a Major in Emergency Management. To major in this field, students must obtain a minimum of 30 credits in the Emergency Management course offerings, as well as 90 credits in general academic and minor courses. The courses in this program will educate students in disaster prevention and management strategies, emergency planning and response preparedness, and the program will also explore particular situations in which these skills are necessary including terrorism and homeland security. The undergraduate degree will prepare graduates for a career in government fields and private industries as well as for studies at the graduate level. Prospective students must possess a secondary school diploma or equivalent and a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in any college courses.

Millersville University offers a Master of Science in Emergency management which is delivered entirely through distance education. The program is open to individuals with professional experience in the field as well as to students with a related undergraduate degree. The 30-credit program is taught by a variety of experts in the field, including faculty members, disaster studies researchers and emergency management experts. Students learn about existing emergency and disaster policies, strategic planning and disaster response plans. The program requires a practicum placement which may take place in a current job when it is applicable to the degree, or in a volunteer position acquired by the student. Applicants must possess a Bachelor degree with a minimum grade point average of 2.75. While professional experience in the field is encouraged, it is not mandatory for admissions.

This school offers several postgraduate academic opportunities in emergency preparedness and management. Graduate Certificates are available in Homeland Security Emergency Preparedness and Response as well as in Emergency Management and Public Health. Prospective students may also pursue a Master of Science or Ph.D. with a concentration in Crisis, Emergency, and Risk Management. The certificate programs require six credit courses which may later be applied toward the Master's degree. The Master of Science is a 36-credit hour program which may be completed in a maximum of three years in full time studies or five years in part time studies. The Ph.D. program requires 54 credit hours, and 24 of these credit hours must be spent toward dissertation research.
