The Federal Emergency Management Agency offers training courses and certifications through its Emergency Management Institute. It "provides national leadership in developing and delivering training to ensure that individuals and groups having key emergency management responsibilities possess the requisite skills to perform their jobs effectively," according to FEMA's website. Online and in-person courses include specific subjects, such as emergency management planning and preparedness, incident command and state emergency management directorship.

The International Association of Emergency Managers offers the Certified Emergency Manager Program. This program is designed to elevate and maintain standards for individuals who have basic experience in the emergency management profession. Candidates for certification must have at least 100 hours of emergency management experience and must pass a written essay and multiple-choice exam.

According to FEMA's website, there are nine colleges that have emergency management-related doctoral programs, such as public safety and engineering management, but there is only one doctoral emergency management program. The University of Delaware offers a Ph.D. in Disaster Science and Management. According to the University of Delaware, it "approaches disasters from an interdisciplinary point of view. The program emphasizes theories, research methodologies and policies related to emergency preparedness, mitigation, management and response."
