Located in northern Alberta, Athabasca University is devoted solely to providing distance learning programs through a combination of online multimedia and independent correspondence study. A post-diploma bachelor of science in nursing degree program is offered to practicing LPNs who have at least one year of full-time work experience and a minimum average of C-minus on previous academic coursework. Courses are delivered in asynchronous format, meaning that students may complete them at their own pace and according to their own personal schedules. Coursework includes statistics, critical thinking, psychology, nursing informatics, nursing theory and concepts, community and family health promotion, management and leadership, health systems and adult health alterations.

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology offers a comprehensive post-diploma bachelor of science in nursing program. This program may be completed within three years of full-time study or five years of part-time study. Course topics include information and communication technology in health care, anatomy and physiology, pharmacotherapeutics, pathophysiology, microbiology, psychology, ethics, statistics, nutrition, research methods and nursing leadership. Students complete hands-on practicum courses in child and family health and community health during summer sessions.

Located near the metropolitan Vancouver area, the University of the Fraser Valley provides a Licensed Practical Nursing Access option within the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree program. Candidates must hold current LPN registration and a diploma in practical nursing that includes courses in anatomy, physiology and English with a minimum grade of C or better. Successful applicants are then admitted into the second year of the four-year BSN program. Course topics include health determinants, developmental transitions, pharmacotherapeutics, pathophysiology, nursing practice, health care ethics, statistics, community health nursing and health law. Students also complete supervised clinical training at local hospitals and community agencies.
