International LPN Degrees

International degree programs are a great way to see the world while getting an education. According to the National Science Foundation, the international community surpasses the United States in the number of college-age students who obtain science degrees. International nursing degree programs provide one option for practical applications of science. If you're interested in pursuing an international LPN degree, there are several important considerations worth exploring.
  1. Foreign Degree Credentialing

    • The term LPN (licensed practical nurse) is a professional title given to nurses in the United States who have fulfilled certain educational and licensing credentials. The NCLEX-PN is the U.S. licensing exam you must pass to become an LPN. If you obtain a nursing degree abroad, some states require that you also practice nursing in that foreign country. After obtaining some work experience abroad, you can sit for an exam through a credentialing organization called the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (available in 50 countries) to test your English language skills, nursing competency, and likelihood of passing the NCLEX-PN and obtaining a work visa thereafter.

    Online Degree Programs

    • One way of circumventing extensive credentialing after you obtain your nursing degree is to get your nursing degree online. Many online nursing programs allow you to conduct almost the entire program through Internet exchanges, which enables you to take classes from anywhere in the world. After passing a U.S.-accredited program, you can sit for the NCLEX-PN to become an LPN. You can take the NCLEX-PN in several international locations. Be mindful that not all online programs are the same. Do the research to select an online school that is accredited by a legitimate and verifiable organization.

    Choose the Right International Program

    • Review the education guidelines offered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing to ensure that the international program you are interested in provides an education that meets U.S. standards. An LPN program in other countries may be referred to as an "Enrolled Nurse" or "Second Level General Nurse" degree program. It should provide opportunities for clinical observation and demonstrate your participation in coursework through transcripts with a school seal.
