Working Nursing Degrees

If you have a Bachelor of Science degree but wish to pursue a career in nursing, options are available to you. Some programs allow students to use their existing degree to obtain a nursing degree in as little as 15 months. The admission requirements often include a minimum grade point average in college coursework as well as certain prerequisite courses. Required grade point averages and prerequisites vary by institution.
  1. The George Washington University

    • The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., provides a 15-month full-time nursing program, allowing students with a bachelor's degree in another field to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The admission requirements include that students have a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in their undergraduate degree program and a minimum average of 3.0 in their last 30 credit hours of course study. The student must have taken at least 6 credit hours of English, 3 credit hours of math, 12 credit hours of humanities or social science and 12 credit hours of science courses, such as anatomy or physiology, for their bachelor's degree.

    Valdosta State University

    • Valdosta State University in southern Georgia offers individuals holding a bachelor's degree in a program other than nursing the opportunity to enroll in an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. The minimum requirements are 45 hours of core curriculum that must include at least four of five required science courses. A minimum of a 2.8 grade point average is required in these core courses as well as minimum scores on a test of essential academic skills. Students must obtain a minimum of a C letter grade in each of the science courses they have taken. Based on admission requirements, students will be accepted in full or as contingent on completing admission requirements.

    Idaho State University

    • The Idaho State University Meridian Health Science Center in Meridian, Idaho, offers degrees in more than 20 medical disciplines, including an accelerated degree program in nursing. The program allows individuals with a bachelor's degree to pursue a career in nursing the opportunity to receive their nursing degree in less than 18 months. Courses begin in January of each year and consist of four consecutive semesters ending in May of the following year. The program prepares students to take the registered nurse licensing exam at the end of the fourth term. Enrollment is limited to 30 students at the beginning of each January term.

    Wichita State University

    • Wichita State University is the largest nursing school in Kansas, with approximately 400 undergraduate and graduate students. The accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is designed for students with a bachelor's degree in another field to achieve their nursing degree within 2 years. The minimum requirements for acceptance into the program are 67 credit hours of prerequisite course work, with a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average, and an overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.0. Students must also take a Test of Essential Academic Skills and achieve a minimum passing score.
