Online Landscape Degrees

A landscape credential at the post-secondary level addresses the physical design and horticultural development of both public and private outdoor spaces. Also referred to as landscape architects or landscape managers, landscapers are employed in a variety of settings to create and maintain outdoor places that are both beautiful and functional. Several technical schools and colleges provide post-secondary training in landscaping that is delivered in a flexible and convenient online distance learning format. Students can study at their own pace and from any location with minimal disruption to their personal schedules.

    • Ashworth College provides an online career diploma in landscape design that trains students to create harmonious, functional designs in any outdoor space. This program consists of 18 lessons, covering topics such as the landscaping industry, plant and flower selection, cost estimating, contracts, irrigation, maintenance, interior design, customer service, safety standards, human resources and self-employment. Graduates are qualified to work independently or seek employment with professional landscaping firms, garden centers, nurseries, public agencies and golf courses.

    Texas Tech University

    • The Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech University College offers a 15-credit graduate certificate in horticultural landscape management through online learning. Students may pursue this program as a stand alone credential or in conjunction with a master's degree. A bachelor's degree and must submit a statement of interest is required for entry into the program. Students may study on a full time or part time basis. Course topics include arboriculture, weed science, pesticides, nursery management, herbicide mechanisms, plant nutrients, soil science and administrative skills for landscape architecture. A grade of "C" or better must be maintained throughout this program.

    University of Massachusetts at Amherst

    • The University of Massachusetts at Amherst offers an online certificate program in urban landscape and garden development. This program focuses on sustainable design methods and techniques within public and private urban environments. Coursework includes introductory urban landscape, plant materials, open space in urban settings and urban landscape design. Students may choose from a variety of electives courses, including energy issues, water management, computer applications, project management and the history of land usage. A hands-on internship is also required.
