How do I Increase Enrollment in California Community College?

As of February 2010, there has been a decline in the enrollment at California Community Colleges, according to the Los Angeles Times. This past school year, California Community Colleges saw a 1 percent dip in enrollment, which equates to about 21,000 students. The dip in enrollment is attributed to the fact that the campuses had to cut back on some recreational courses because of state budget cuts. The Times also goes on to say that the trend is likely to continue. However, there are steps that can be taken to increase enrollment at these community colleges and offset the recent decline in students.

Identify the key areas that are lacking in the student service and academic affairs departments. The student services office will deal with all of the issues that happen outside of the classroom. Examples include athletics, residence life and student activities. Also, evaluate the offerings of the academic affairs department. Research the academic offerings of other more successful community colleges with the idea of incorporating some of them into your own system.

Add to the student services area. One way to increase enrollment at the community college level is to start or increase the sports offerings. By adding new sports, you are sure to attract players to the college who would not have considered it before the additions. At the community college level, the athletic department will annually spend less money than the athletes are paying in tuition. Not only does the college boost enrollment, it also makes money.

Increase the core academic offerings through non-traditional channels. By adding distance-learning and online classes to your academic offerings, the community college will be able to reach a new demographic that it previously could not touch. Online classes can be offered to and taken by any resident of the state. This offering would help to increase enrollment because it appeals to stay-at-home parents and retirees. In addition, any money the school receives in tuition would serve as profit, as the overhead with online classes is very low.
