Universities in the Texas Gulf Coast Plains Region

Home to cities such as Kingsville and Corpus Christi, the Texas Gulf Coast begins in the southernmost portion of the state spanning northward along the Gulf of Mexico. The area is home to a small number of universities that grant undergraduate and graduate degrees. These public institutions feature programs in fields such as marine sciences and agriculture as well as humanities, social sciences and health care.
  1. Texas A&M University Corpus Christi

    • Founded in 1947, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi has a combined enrollment of around 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The school consists of colleges of business, education, liberal arts, nursing and health sciences and science and technology. The college features a special program for first-year undergraduates designed to help students adjust to college coursework and campus living through academic tutoring, study skills classes and organized social activities.     • Home to more than 7,100 undergraduate and graduate students, Texas A&M University Kingsville is located on a 246-acre campus on Texas Gulf Coast Plains. The college's engineering programs are its highest-rated academically with areas of specialization including chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, petroleum and natural gas, explains the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." The largest programs in the school in terms of enrollment are its education majors, such as the elementary, secondary, music, physical and agricultural specialties. In addition to federal and state financial aid programs, the school offers a limited number of work-study placements and institutional scholarships.     University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute

    • The University of Texas at Austin has its Marine Science Institute campus in Port Aransas, a Gulf Coast Plain community. The college offers its Bachelor of Science degree in marine and freshwater science from the campus as well as master's and doctoral degrees in the field. The graduate programs allow students to specialize in either marine biology or marine chemistry. For the baccalaureate degree program, students typically complete the majority of the program at the school's main campus in Austin, spending one or two summers in Port Aransas to gain experience in the school's laboratories or aboard one of the university's research ships. The graduate programs are held entirely at the Marine Science Institute. Approximately 55 percent of all undergraduate students at the University of Texas at Austin receive some form of financial aid, reports the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." Assistantships and fellowships are available for graduate students.
