The East Coast is known for its colleges and universities, and many are recognized as being among the best in the world. The population density, proximity to major cities and established cultural centers make the East Coast fertile soil for institutions of higher learning. When thinking about eastern universities, the Ivy League often comes first to mind, but the East Coast offers a variety of universities to fit any student's interests or budget.
  1. University of Maryland College Park

    • The University of Maryland College Park, home of the Terps, is just outside Washington, DC. U.S. News & World Report ranks Maryland No. 11 among public universities in the nation. The College Park campus is the flagship university in the University of Maryland system. The university is a research university and offers undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. Undergraduates can participate in research, overseas study and internships. Maryland offers nearly 100 graduate programs.

    University of Connecticut

    • Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut has five regional campuses, with its campus at Storrs. Undergraduates can choose from among 101 majors that culminate in seven different degrees. UConn's graduate program offers 86 fields of study. UConn also has medical, dental and law schools. U.S. News & World Report ranks it the No. 1 public university in New England, and 83 percent of incoming freshman graduated in the top 25 percent of their high school class.

    University of Florida

    • University of Florida is one of the five largest universities in the nation and the oldest university in Florida. With its 2,000-acre campus and more than 900 buildings, the university's facilities are worth more than $1 billion. Students can choose from among more than 100 majors and from 200 graduate and professional programs, including law, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.

    University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

    • The University of North Carolina dates to 1793, when the state's first constitution included provisions for a public university. Today, UNC awards more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees. UNC awards six professional degrees through its law, dentistry, medical and pharmacy schools. In 2009, nearly 80 percent of incoming freshman graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school classes.
